Community Volunteer Tax Clinic

Description

We are looking for people to make a difference in someone's life!  Filing taxes for an individual on low income can significantly impact their lives by increasing their monthly income and allow them access to benefits such as GST, Trillium, and Child Tax Credit.  These benefits are not accessible unless income taxes are completed; and that’s where you can help!

Your duties would include conducting tax appointments over the phone with individuals in the Greater City of Sudbury and other surrounding communities to prepare and file their income taxes.

We are looking for a time commitment of approximately 4-6 hours per week (but we're very flexible!) with the potential for more hours during the busy tax season (March and April).  There is a minimum commitment of 6 hours for the initial training as well as an additional hour for program installation on your computer.

We are looking for people with a willingness to learn with an ability to navigate simple computer programs and who will agree to undergo a criminal reference check.  You will also have to register with the CRA as a volunteer tax preparer with our agency to receive your own EFILE credentials.  Rest assured, assistance and guidance will be provided every step of the way.

All orientation and training will be provided virtually before any actual taxes will be filed, and you will have supervision that's just a phone call away.  The taxes we complete are simple in nature and require only basic knowledge of tax preparation.

Not only will you be helping individuals in need, but you will be learning valuable skills in tax preparation that could translate back to your own personal taxes.  By the end of your training, you will understand how credits are calculated, what expenses are viable to claim, and what benefits are best suited for each individual client.  Not only could you claim knowledge of income tax support on your resume, but you could also learn how to do your own personal taxes and save yourself money in the process.

The only out of pocket expenses, other than having your own computer and internet connection, would be for a criminal reference check which we will reimburse upon successful completion.

We actively screen our volunteers to gauge their level of aptitude and knowledge so that we can better help them reach a level of skill where they will feel comfortable filing taxes on their own.  If you have a desire to learn, and a willingness to try something exciting and new, give us a call and start your journey to helping low-income individuals in our community today!
