Volunteer: Seniors' Transportation Volunteer Driver

The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking Volunteer Drivers for the  Community Health and Wellness Department. 

Transportation Drivers make a significant impact to those in our community that may have no other means of transportation for important appointments and activities.  As a volunteer in this program you will assist our clients in many ways; they will benefit from being able to live independently, alleviating social isolation, and their overall better well being.

 Key Responsibilities

Abide by all policies, procedures and practices including but not limited to vehicle circle checks, mileage and route documentation Drive clients to designated destinations Assist clients to and from vehicle Work with Program Coordinator to ensure that the exterior and interior of vehicles are clean and safe Report any concerns of clients with deteriorating health and/or other needs to the Program Coordinator Complete all required training and attend on-going additional training sessions as needed Report to the Transportation Coordinator for all scheduling and availability Priority Assistance to Transition Home (PATH): Transitioning Patients from Hospital to home with the assistance of a Transitional Care Worker  Perform other duties as required

 Skills and Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong defensive driving skills Strong customer service and interpersonal skills Requires a high level of patience, compassion and empathy in a non-judgemental environment Good working knowledge of the area Ability to be on-call and accept ‘last-minute’ ride requests is always an asset

 Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years driving experience with a valid G-class Ontario driver’s license with a good driving record This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record check or Enhanced Police Information Check (EPIC).

 Working Conditions

Much of the work is performed independently with minimal supervision Will be required to drive a Red Cross vehicle Driving in various weather conditions Must wear proper personal protection equipment (which will be provided) and must follow all safety protocols The driver will be responsible to come to the Canadian Red Cross Branch to submit and/or receive necessary paperwork and to complete training. Some on-line training will be required Minimum six-month commitment Days of operation are Monday to Friday.  There is flexibility with time commitment, and we can work to accommodate your availability.  Common shifts are once per week for a minimum of 4 hours.

At this time, the CRC has temporarily suspended our Covid-19 vaccination policy and does not require, but continues to strongly encourage full vaccination of all our personnel.
