Family Room Volunteer - Health Sciences North It’s a pleasure to meet you. Now, let us introduce ourselves!

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto is a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. We encompass a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. We strive to provide a sense of normalcy for our families during a chaotic and traumatic time and provide a variety of programs and services to support the whole family.

What’s in it for you:

Family Rooms provides a soothing place of comfort, care and compassion within the walls of the hospital, where families can rest, retreat and relax while being just steps away from their sick child. This is an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the world of family-centered care, to gain a deeper understanding of the issues faced by families with a sick child, and to know at the end of each shift that you have made a difference in the lives of our families.

Why we want you:

Making a connection is the first step in making an awesome impression! We are looking for you to provide great customer service to our families. We often do not connect directly with the patients so it is essential that Family Room volunteers make families feel at home and bring comfort during a stressful and frightening time.

Skills you need:

Are you able to brighten up everyone’s day with a beautiful smile? Are you a good listener and communicator? Are you able to put our families, guests and visitors first? Assistance in covering up to 50% of the rabies vaccination costs (total cost is approx. $600) is an option for internships of 3 months or longer. Access to personal transportation is an asset.

Benefits:

Wildlife internships provide a rewarding experience, as most of an intern’s focus is spent directly on animal care. Interns gain valuable practical experience in wildlife handling, care and husbandry techniques and enrichment. Interns learn a wide variety of aspects of wildlife rehabilitation such as species identification, natural history and behavior, animal health and nutrition, diagnostic procedures, fluid therapy, hygiene, environmental enrichment, release criteria and human/wildlife conflict resolution.

Interns develop strong mentorships/friendships with like-minded people and gain valuable work skills while learning to perform efficiently in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment.

How to Contact:

Please sent a resume to turtlepondwc@gmail.com. Provide a covering letter, including your availability, vaccination status, what you hope to gain from an internship and how you will contribute to our team. Also indicate whether you would like to be considered for accommodations and include start and end dates that you are available.

Volunteer: Volunteer Tutors - Virtual & In Person (Fall/Winter Programming)

Hello!

Frontier College is preparing to run math and literacy-based programs for elementary and high school students from October to April.

A little about the programs we are running this year:

In-Person Math Clubs (in community school) is a program where students and volunteers play math games to enhance the skills of the learners in a fun and exciting way Virtual Reading Buddies is a program where learners and tutors meet online to do some reading work. You start as a large group to do a story, then go into break-out rooms with a single learner. The large group allows for a social aspect, as well as modeling good reading behaviour, while the one-to-one aspect allows each student to get the individualized reading support they need In-Person Homework Club & Virtual Homework Club are both programs where tutors and students meet (either online or at a community location) to work on homework together. When students don't have homework, it is a great time to help them with anything they may need a little extra help with at school. One to One Tutoring is a program where a tutor and student are paired and work on a one-to-one basis to assist the student with areas where they need some extra support.

As part of our screening and training process, you will need to start by filling out our Volunteer Inquiry Form here. This will begin an online file in our secure database; once I receive notification I will send you some more information from our system to fill out your application form.

Other steps included in our screening process include reference checks (we do call, so please ensure you have permission), online orientation, a knowledge check, and initial training. More information will come once your Inquiry Form is received.

There are virtual and in-person opportunities.

Volunteer: Remote Volunteer Opportunity - Become an OCO Peer Mentor Today!

Across Ontario there are 3.3 million caregivers – ordinary people including children and youth who are caring for family members, partners, friends and neighbours, who have physical and/or mental health challenges. These caregivers deliver roughly three quarters of all patient care, including personal, emotional and often medical care. Caregivers are the single most valuable resource to our health care system, our communities and our society at large.

Mentoring is a method of passing on lived experiences to support another caregiver in an empowering and meaningful way. Anyone who has been a caregiver will know that the caregiving role presents many challenges. These challenges will be different for every caregiver and from time to time support will be needed.

Why Are Caregivers Looking for Support from a Peer Mentor?

A caregiver may look to another caregiver for support with:
• Social isolation
• Emotional challenges
• Developing coping strategies
• Access to information
• Speaking to someone who understands what it is like to be a caregiver
• Validation of the frustrations they are experiencing
• Thinking about their own hopes, needs and aspirations
• Speaking to someone outside their normal circle of friends and family
• Overcoming guilt
• An opportunity to air feelings in a safe environment

A Peer Mentor has a wealth of experience and knowledge which can help another caregiver with the challenges of their caregiving situation. Caregivers share a common identity and can create a bond through sharing their experiences.

A trained Peer Mentor will be able to:
• ‘Just be there’/Listen
• Provide encouragement, support and acceptance
• Acknowledge a caregiver’s strengths
• Share lived experience and give real life examples
• Discuss a caregiver’s wellbeing
• Provide support with developing coping strategies
• Provide relevant information
• Provide support to set goals the caregiver identifies
• Celebrate any goals the caregiver achieves
• Be someone for a caregiver to bounce ideas off

Sign up to become an OCO Peer Mentor and help other caregivers as they navigate their journey, today!
